After undergraduate work at San Francisco State University in Integrative Health Studies, Stewart attended The Body Therapy Center for a certificate in Massage Therapy. A decade of deep tissue bodywork with mostly women clients gave her a solid education in the female body. She also received a certificate in hypnotherapy from Halcyon College in Santa Cruz, California in 1989.
In 1994, she received training from Birth Assistants of Boulder County in childbirth assistance and also gave birth to her first son in an uncomplicated hospital birth. She attended several more births before the homebirth of her second son in 1996. Her third child, a daughter, was born at home in 1998. She has moderate developmental delays.
Stewart wrote over 100 parenting columns for The Boulder Planet in addition to reviewing over 25children's films, theater and both parenting and children's books. She also wrote dozens of health and travel articles and contributed an essay to The Spirit of Pregnancy: An Interactive Anthology for Your Journey to Motherhood (Contemporary Books) in 2000. After developing several newsletters for retail markets, she presently edits a newsletter for Exceptional Families of Boulder County.
Currently she writes a monthly parenting book review for Boulder-based Family Connections newspaper, and is a regular columnist for www.InspiredParenting.net. She continues to publish in other newspapers and on on-line magazines including ePregnancy, The Long Road Home, The Daily Camera, and Inner Self Magazine. Three more of her parenting essays have been accepted for publication in book anthologies.
After two years in an apprenticeship with dance educator Melissa Michaels and continuing education classes at Naropa University in art therapy, Stewart started a business, Mother Hands Services, providing services and support for all stages of motherhood. She facilitates several classes using guided movements, writing exercises, creative arts and practical information.
The Art of Birthing is a childbirth preparation class.
Another Country...of special needs is specifically for mothers who are raising children with special needs.
Mother Arts is an ongoing class for mothers throughout the parenting continuum.
She also leads mother-blessing circles for mother-to-be and their babies.
In addition to Moving Through Pregnancy: Preparing Body, Mind and Soul for Birth, Stewart is completing another book manuscript, New Mother Blessing Circles: A Guide to Creating Meaningful Ceremonies.
